Get the software

Encouraged by the TWO WHOLE REPLIES to my first blog, I'm going to carry on.

Let's see if anyone wants to have a go.

First thing to do is to get the software and install it.

Here are the downloads.

I don't regularly use Linux or MAC. Mine is Windows. But it says it works on those other platforms so I guess it does.

Anyway, near the bottom of the page are the download links. Why not install it and let's see how far you get? They look like this:



Tell it to install everything. It will ask if you want to install the drivers, say yes to all of them.

Once that's done, run it. It takes a while to load up.

Later I'll post what to do just to get started and make sure everything is going to OK for you to do your thing.

OK, so you set up the software, MPLAB-X. Run it. Takes a short time to load up. Now, let's make a project. You don't need any hardware yet, just your PC. From the menu, select File, then New Project. Click Next. Type in the device as shown here, PIC16F15345. Click Next. Click on Simulator.  Click Next. You probably won't have many, if any, of these. So click on Download Latest and follow any instructions. A compiler is a piece of software which takes what you write (this will be code in the C language) and compiles it into what the microprocessor understands (this is code in assembler language). Following on from the last post we'll set up the oscillator while we're in the configuration bits. See this one, RSTOSC? Notice how it has the Warning Sign next to it? It means we can't just change it. So what we need to do is to click the button "Generate Source Code to Output". Click it. There will be a list of what are called compiler directives. These start with #pragma. #pragma directives are not C. They are specific lines that tell a specific compiler to do a specific thing, in this case it is setting configuration bits. There are two of these you'll need, one is the watchdog, the other is the oscillator. Don't worry too much about why, just copy them in. All will become clear later.
